On the way to school with a pedestrian escort

Children who walk to school learn about traffic, and get good exercise and social training. The youngest school children
need help getting safely to school and should not walk to school without being accompanied by an adult, for example a
pedestrian escort.

What is a pedestrian escort/pedestrian escort group?
A pedestrian escort is an adult who accompanies his or her own or others' children along their route to school; walking
and/or taking a bus, tram etc. A pedestrian escort group comprises several adults sharing the responsibility of accompanying a particular group of children. When one pedestrian escort accompanies children, this is also called a pedestrian escort group.

Why do we need pedestrian escorts?
The pedestrian escort helps children acquire knowledge and experience and develop positive attitudes about traffic so
eventually they can safely make their own way to school without being accompanied by an adult.

Other advantages:

  • both adults and children will feel safer about children in traffic
  • exercise and fresh air improve health and increase the ability to concentrate
  • reduced car traffic in the school area
  • the adults save time when they don't have to accompany the children every day

Who can be a pedestrian escort?
A pedestrian escort is an adult, responsible person who wants to teach children something about how to behave in traffic.

It is recommended that a pedestrian escort generally is responsible for up to three children.

Here's how you can organize a pedestrian escort group

  1. Take the initiative when parents and their children meet in the spring before their first school year. You can also ask
a teacher to make pedestrian escorts a topic for the first parent-teacher meeting or during the first days of the school year.
  2. Contact people you think might be interested in your neighbourhood.
  3. Plan a regular route with the adults in the pedestrian escort group. Use a map if you like. Walk the route together.
Pinpoint problem areas along the school route.
  4. Make a list of weekdays, the pedestrian escort for each day and his/her telephone number, meeting places and times. You will find a template for the list at here (in Norwegian)
  5. Agree on a system for notifying the others of absenteeism in the group.
  6. Agree on any special clothing for the children or adults (e.g. reflector vests, caps etc.)
